The word "pesticide" often causes immediate worry. In fact, pound-for-pound, pure caffeine is more toxic than many common insecticides.
The Science of the Dose
In toxicology, safety is measured by a standard rating called an LD50 (the amount of a substance it takes to cause an effect). A lower number means a substance is stronger in its pure form.
Pure caffeine carries a surprisingly high toxicity rating. Research originally published in the journal Science demonstrated that coffee plants actually evolved caffeine to act as a natural, built-in insecticide to disrupt attacking bugs!

Does this mean your morning latte is dangerous? Of course not. You enjoy it safely because it is highly diluted.
